Stay tuned....next post I will have pictures....
I'm ridiculously embarrassed about how long it's been since I last posted. A lot has happened this Spring. We closed in the pavilion. This is something I'm super excited about. No more flying boxes in the wind! Let's see....we also planted a few acres of garlic this year. Raspberries will be more plentiful this year as we are about one year away from full production. Along with the red raspberries, we have blackcaps and blackberries.
Stay tuned....next post I will have pictures....
So a few weeks back a van load of Polish tourists landed at the farm. They were stranded as their van had broke down. They needed a job and we needed berries picked! Days passed, then weeks and still no van repair. Each day they would come back with a smile on their face and we would joke about their adventure in Rodney. We learned that these Polish tourists were young professionals back at home and had left for North America for an adventure. Long story short, we discovered that one was a photographer....check out our family photo shoot after a day picking on the farm
Just thought I'd share that our blueberries are officially organic! Also thought I'd share this clear indication that our berries are ready
We've been gearing up for the start of the 2015 season and we are so glad it's finally here. This week we put up our new sign, dug up our first bulbs of garlic and bottled some more honey....and picked a few blueberries! I made a surprise appearance at the Covent Garden Market this weekend and sold out very quickly. Looks like there were also some very excited customers to see us! So we are hoping to be up to full speed by the end of the week, weather permitting of course. Bring on the heat!
It got really quiet after supper so I popped my head out the door to see what was happening and this is what I found:
New farm clothes of choice include cute dresses and runners without socks
June has brought us some well timed rain. We went on a family farm tour last night on the golf cart. Here's what we found...
Blueberries are looking green but they are growing. We are looking forward to an early July start to picking season.
Garlic is looking great. We will be trimming scapes this weekend. If anyone wants some let me know.
Meet our family of geese. They look so sweet and innocent here. We weren't able to capture them hissing at us.
And our 2015 picking crew resting up for blueberry season.
That's right. Blueberry season is on its way! The berries are starting to form and we are aiming for the picking season to start around the first week or second week in July. We will keep updating our website or check us out on facebook. If you would like to pre-order already picked berries, just send me an email.
So our blueberry jam and honey are bottled and ready. We are very proud of our honey. You need to taste it to believe it! We loved the honey so much that we used it to sweeten our jam. This is not your grandma's jam. With only 40g of honey per jar the jam is sweet but not punch you in your face sweet :). Both jam and honey will be available at the farm this year.
On a personal note, we also added something to the farm. In March 2015 we welcomed another blueberry picker to the team: Calvin is baby #3 for us. He's been a great addition to the family.
Our website has been neglected for the past few months. I could make a million excuses, but need to admit that we just got busy. 2014 was a great first year for us. James, I and the girls had so much fun at the farm. We found some new markets for our blueberries and kept our returning customers happy. So what's new for 2015?
James happily harvested honey from the bees that pollinated our blueberries. It tastes amazing and with a little (ok, a lot) of help from my artist friend, Krista Schneider we have a very tastefully designed jar of honey for sale. We will be welcoming Colony Honey to our product list this year. Also, with the abundance of blueberries, we had some to spare for making jam. Watch for our blueberry jam at the market as well.
My week was full of farmers' markets this week. We had a great response and sold out at all 3 markets! I was so proud to here such wonderful responses to our huge, great tasting berries. I've highlighted a few more awesome comments that were shared this week by Blueberry Hill customers:
They turned so quickly!!!! So our official grand opening will be July 16/14. Call now to order your frozen or fresh picked. Try me at the farm: 519-785-2217. Please leave me a message because we are BUSY! I will call you back.
Also, I wanted to share with you all a new Blueberry Hill Product that will be coming to the farm this year: Blueberry Hill Blueberry Honey. James has taken up beekeeping in all his spare time so we will now have honey. The bees pollinated Blueberry Hill blueberries. So its a true Blueberry Hill product.
