We are getting there, but not quite ready yet. We are optimistic for an opening in the second week of July. Call in to the farm for the latest updates and opening dates. I'd love to hear from you! I'll keep the blog updated as well. Be sure to catch us at the following markets this year: Saturdays at Covent Garden Market and Horton Farmers Market (St.Thomas) and Wednesdays at Grand Bend Farmers Market.
We have definitely been busy this spring at Blueberry Hill Farm. James and I have hand planted another 3 acres of fruit. We've added a some red, purple and black raspberries, as well as blackberries to the Blueberry Hill roster. We won't have raspberries this year, but soon enough, my friends! In addition to the planting, we've tiled another 5 acres to make room for additional planting for the years to come. So lots of growth is happening here at the farm.
We are now in prime grass cutting season at the farm. Being organic, means lots of grass cutting! Most days of the week we have the tractor, rider and push mowers going.
We're gearing up for opening day. The bushes are loaded with berries and we are patiently waiting for the berries to ripen. We are aiming for mid July, but we'll keep you posted. This year, be sure to catch us at Covent Garden Market and St. Thomas Horton's Market on Saturdays, as well as the Grand Bend Farmer's Market on Wednesdays.
About blueberries! We have lots of clean-up still to do at the farm but the nicer weather made me think of delicious blueberry recipes. You see, my family and I have been feeling the effects of a long winter on our bodies. Granted, I may have used the excuse of 2 small girls that get cold quickly to abort any outdoor missions. So when the warm weather hits, so does our desire to get outside...2 small girls included. We spent the day raking leaves and cleaning up the yard. We'll get to those blueberry bush trimmings eventually! So after a long day of raking and planting, we were hungry and were craving something filling but quick. Behold!!!! The Ultimate Blueberry Smoothie:
Finally, some spring weather! We had a family outing last night to Blueberry Hill to show the girls all the hard work that's been going on. Thanks to an amazing pruning crew, we are wrapping up the pruning season. We had friends and friends of friends all get their hands dirty, arms sore and maybe even a few scratches to the face to get the job done. Thanks again everyone!
Here's our future pruners:
....and the clean up will continue
For the past two weekends, James and I have been lucky enough to get out to the farm and start the pruning. Finally!!! We've been anxiously awaiting the warmer weather to get here. I think we have definitely spent too much time inside this winter. We both forgot how awesome it is to be outside. The manual labour is a welcomed change as well. I figure after we are done pruning I should have arms of steel and a nice tan. Please cooperate, Winter!
